Why Exchange for Change?

• Education Inside Prisons: Exchange for Change offers transformative education programs, including creative writing workshops, correspondence courses, and book clubs, conducted within correctional facilities. • Promoting Dialogue and Understanding: By fostering dialogue and connection through the written word, Exchange for Change encourages empathy, understanding, and reconciliation among incarcerated individuals and the broader community.

• Reducing Recidivism: Research has shown that access to education and supportive programs during incarceration can significantly reduce the likelihood of individuals returning to prison upon release. Exchange for Change's focus on education and personal development contributes to breaking the cycle of recidivism and promoting successful reintegration into society. Based on a report issued by the Mackinac Center For Public Policy, it was found that prison education programs reduce the likelihood of recidivism by 14.8%. The findings also show positive employment benefits for former offenders, including a 6.9% increase in the likelihood of employment and an extra $131 in quarterly wages. Find out more here.

• Advocacy and Awareness: In addition to its direct services, Exchange for Change advocates for criminal justice reform and raises awareness about issues related to incarceration, mass incarceration, and systemic inequalities within the justice system.
